Cards Make It Work

Cards for Everything

To the non technical types, which are the majority, it seems like there are various cards for just about everything your computer or television or whatever electronic device must do.  Here is a sampling of what I'm talking about just in the main categories for cards used in computers:

  • Graphics Cards
  • Video Cards
  • Interface Cards
  • PCMCIA Cards
  • Sound Cards
  • Motherboard Diagnostic Cards

Now that's a lot of different cards!  But without them your gadget is not going to work or at least it's not going to work the way you either want it to or have become accustomed to it performing.

Take for example video cards.  Why on earth do I need one of those you might ask?  Well, it's like this.  Without one of these cards you'd most likely be reading the text that describes the scene you're viewing on one of your 3-D games as opposed to actually looking at the scene on your computer screen.  Understand?

What Do These Cards Do?

Actually, I've already sort of told you what these cards do by telling you about the video cards in very basic terms.  However, expanding a bit, most of these cards provide input and output signals that receive and provide information that allow us to experience certain effects that these cards were designed for.  For example, a sound card does just what it says.  It allows your computer or electronic device to receive and produce sound in a format that is recognizable to you.

Other kinds of cards do other things, like network interface cards.  Essentially, these little cards allow your computer to connect to a network.

Bottom line is that without these cards our computers would be an awful lot like they were in the early days and that is a stand alone device that did not provide much in the way of palatable and super enjoyable (addictive) user experiences.  The evolution of the Internet and games and communications and music....well, all that stuff meant that old computer had to evolve, too.  And cards helped it grow and advance to where we are today.

Do I Need Extra Cards?

If you're using an older computer and trying to play some of the latest computer games, especially with others online, chances are you're going to need additional video or graphics cards.  I'm not here to try to tell you what to do on this front.  Most computers built and purchased of late have loads more power when it comes to these kinds of needs because the manufacturers know what their market is demanding.  But if you're trying to get by on a budget and make your computer last a little longer, you can do your own upgrading.  Additional cards can make huge differences in what you've been dealing with.
